Factors associated with the maintenance of hand hygiene and the use of personal protective equipment among dental hygienists

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate hand hygiene maintenance and the use of personal protective equipment by dental hygienists. The study is based on a survey of 377 dental hygienists working in clinical settings. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 20.0 statistical program, and a p<0.05 was considered significant. The results indicated that average hand hygiene maintenance rate was 3.66¡¾0.31, Factors that influence the maintenance of the hand hygiene include duration and technique of scrubbing, as well as condition of the hands, and techniques used for drying etc. and the average use of personal protective equipment rate was 3.33¡¾0.34. Maintenance of hand hygiene and use of personal protective equipment by dental workers varied according to environmental factors, such as hospital type, accreditation of dental hospital, number of dental hygienists, and number of patients a day(p<0.05). In order to enhance the maintenance
of hand hygiene and usage personal protective equipment, program development and implementation for teaching of and adherence to aseptic procedures is very important. Such a program should include periodic reinforcement of infection control education and regular monitoring of infection control activities.
